Students of nearly 200 primary schools in the far-flung tribal areas of Sahyadri hill ranges in Maharashtra are getting into the habit of reading books, thanks to an initiative by a group of trekkers from Pune. Libraries consisting of books on history, environment, animals, forts and stories of well-known scientists, authors, sportsmen and freedom fighters are being set up in these schools by the Marathidesha Foundation throughits movement 'Shivsahyadri Granthdindi'. Damodar Magdum, one of the members of the foundation, said during their treks and fort conservation-related activities in the Sahyadri ranges, they realised that the schools and students there were facing resource crunch. "So, we decided to do something for such schools and planned to donate books that can be used for extra-curricular reading," he said. Two college students went missing after they fell in a canal here on Saturday, police said. Three students of Desh Bhagat College -- Farid Hasan Ansari, Honey Tiyagi and Pranav residents of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab respectively -- went for a walk near the canal, they said. One of them fell in the water trying to wash his hand and the other two fell later trying to save their friend, they said. One of students, Pranav, was rescued by the locals but the other two are still missing, officials said. Sirhind SHO Rajneesh Sood said a search operation has been launched for the missing youths.
Two primary school students, one of whom is visually challenged, were reportedly made to stand in the scorching sun for two hours for not paying fees, following which the state child rights commission Saturday registered a case against the school management. One of the children, who collapsed, was later hospitalised. The children, second standard students of the unaided school at Karumalloor near Aluva, had not paid the last instalment of fees and the management recently refused them permission to appear for the examination, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said in a release. The case was registered based on media reports, the commission said. A report has also been sought from the school and education department authorities, the commission sources said. The Kerala Human Rights Commission has also registered a case against the school.
Girls have topped the science and arts stream of the Bihar Intermediate examination (Class 12), the results of which were announced on Saturday. The pass percentage of the Intermediate examination this year was 79.76 per cent while last year it was 52.71 per cent. A Bihar State Education Board (BSEB) release said Rohini Prakash topped the science stream with 473 marks out of total 500 while Rohini Rani topped the arts stream with 463 marks and Satyam Kumar topped the commerce stream with 472 marks. Additional Chief Secretary of Education Department R K Mahajan declared the results of all the three streams in the presence of BSEB chairman Anand Kishore. Talking to the media persons Kishore claimed that "A total of 79.76 per cent candidates, who appeared in all the three streams of arts, science and commerce, have passed the examination this year. The pass percentage previous year was 52.71 per cent." The intermediate examination was conducted from February 6 to February .
The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) on Saturday released the result of intermediate examination of class 12th arts, commerce, and science.79.76 per cent of students have passed the exam, a climb of 27.05 per cent from the previous year.More than 12 lakh students appeared in the exams, which held between February 6 and February 16. The Uttarakhand Commission for Child Rights on Friday demanded a CBI probe into the alleged killing of a class seven student by his seniors at a boarding school in the district recently. Commission Chairperson Usha Negi wrote to Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat seeking a CBI probe. The incident took place at a boarding school in Rani Pokhri area of Dehradun district on March 10, but came to light on Tuesday after the commission intervened in the matter. The victim, Vasu Yadav, hailed from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh. He was allegedly beaten to death by his seniors because they believed permission to leave campus was denied to them as part of punishment for a wrong that Yadav had committed. The senior students believed Yadav had stolen biscuits from a shop during a school outing. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has located more fake links on YouTube claiming to have access to Class 12 question papers on subjects which are yet to be conducted. "The board is keeping a constant vigil and bringing unwanted activities to the notice of police immediately so that suitable and strict action against miscreants can be taken under provisions of IPC and IT Act. More uploads have been located on YouTube falsely claiming to have access to the Class 12 original question papers of subjects which are yet to be conducted," a senior board official said. "FIRs have already been logged with against persons circulating fake news regarding paper leak and availability of question papers prior to the examinations," the official added. The Delhi High Court Friday asked the AAP government's Directorate of Education (DoE) as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against it for not complying with a judicial direction to decide in three weeks the representations of 44 persons seeking to be re-engaged as guest teachers. Justice Suresh Kait issued notice to the DoE asking why contempt proceedings be not initiated against its officials concerned for not complying with the court's direction of October 26 last year. The judge also said that if the order is not complied with by the next date of hearing, May 14, the official concerned would be personally present in court. The direction came on the plea by Dilli Atithi Shikshak Sangh (DASS) which has sought contempt of court action against DoE for not deciding the various representations, sent by the 44 teachers, till date.
