Only 5% looking to buy 4-wheeler may purchase EV this year: Survey

Only 5 per cent of those looking to buy a four-wheeler in the country are likely to buy an electric car this year, according to a survey. The survey, based on the response of 40,000 people from across 319 districts, also found that more than half of the "existing or prospective car owners" are willing to buy an electric car if it is available in the Rs 8-10 lakh price range. Car sales in India crossed 4 million units last year while 72,321 electric four-wheelers were registered, according to the survey conducted by online consumer pulse aggregator platform, LocalCircles. If the 5 per cent of the existing/prospective car owners, as found in the survey, buy one car each and the annual car sales maintains the 2023 numbers, it indicates a demand of 200,000 electric cars this year, LocalCircles said. Of the 40,000 respondents who participated in the survey -- conducted over a period of three months -- 42 per cent are from tier-1 cities, 34 per cent from tier 2 and the remaining 24 per c

Subsidy withdrawal on EVs may lead to stagnated growth: Ather Energy CEO

Withdrawal of government's incentive on sale of electric two-wheelers in April would prompt industry players to work hard and this could result into one or two more years of stagnated growth, Ather Energy's CEO and co-founder Tarun Mehta said on Friday. "The industry is no longer entirely dependent on subsidies for survival but an early discontinuation of the subsidy in April would prompt industry players to tighten their belts and work hard. "Despite this resilience, such a scenario would still result in one or two more years of stagnated growth, pushing the industry further away from its targets," the CEO of the electric two-wheeler firm said in a statement. The central government provides incentives on the sale of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers under the FAME-II (Faster Adoption of Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) scheme, which is ending in March this year. In June last year, the central government has already reduced the subsidy amount on electric .

Tesla is raising worker wages as auto union tries to raise its EV plants

Factory workers at Tesla have been told to expect pay raises this year, a move that comes as the United Auto Workers union tries to organize the electric vehicle maker's U.S. plants. The UAW said Thursday that Tesla workers have told the union about company statements on the raises, which did not give details about the size of the increases. After winning strong contracts with Detroit's three automakers last year, the union has embarked on an effort to organize all nonunion auto plants in the U.S., including Tesla's assembly and battery factories in Texas, California and Nevada. The Tesla raises come after nearly all companies with nonunion auto plants announced worker pay increases shortly after the UAW contracts were ratified. The UAW said its organizing drive will target more than a dozen U.S. plants run by Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo. Tesla also is on the list, along with EV startups Rivian and Lucid. UAW President Shawn F

Tesla recalls over 1.6 mn imported vehicles for steering, door issues

Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million Model S, X, 3 and Y electric vehicles imported to China for problems with their automatic assisted steering functions and door latch controls. China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced the recall on Friday. It said Tesla Motors in Beijing and Shanghai would use remote upgrade technology to fix the problems, so in most cases car owners would not need to visit Tesla service centres to get the upgrades. The recall due to problems with the automatic steering assist function applies to 1.6 million imported Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Ys. When the automatic steering function is engaged, drivers might misuse the combined driving function, increasing a risk of accidents, the notice said. The recall to fix the door unlock logic control for imported Model S and Model X EVs affects 7,538 vehicles made between October 26, 2022 and November 16, 2023. It is needed to prevent door latches from coming open during a ...
