Google introduces AI in search, raising hopes for better results for users

Google on Tuesday rolled out a retooled search engine that will frequently favor responses crafted by artificial intelligence over website links, a shift promising to quicken the quest for information while also potentially disrupting the flow of money-making internet traffic. The makeover announced at Google's annual developers conference will begin this week in the U.S. when hundreds of millions of people will start to periodically see conversational summaries generated by the company's AI technology at the top of the search engine's results page. People will likely still see Google's traditional website links and ads for simple searches for things like a store recommendation or weather forecasts. Google began testing A

Russian court fines Google for failing to store personal data on its users

A Russian court on Tuesday fined Google for failing to store personal data on its Russian users, the latest in a series of fines on the tech giant amid tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine. A magistrate at Moscow's Tagansky district court fined Google 15 million rubles (around $164,200) after the IT company repeatedly refused to store personal data on Russian citizens in Russia. Google was previously fined over the same charges in August 2021 and June 2022 under a Russian law that obliges foreign entities to localise the personal data of their Russian users. The US tech giant was also ordered to pay a 3-million-ruble (about $32,800) fine in August for failing to delete allegedly false information about the conflict in Ukraine. However, Russia can do little to collect the fine, as Google's Russia business was effectively shut down last year after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine. The company has said it filed for bankruptcy in Russia after its bank account was

Apple exec defends decision to make Google default search engine on iPhones

A top Apple executive defended the tech giant's decision to make Google the default search engine on Apple iPhones and Macs, saying there was no valid alternative.' Testifying in the biggest antitrust trial in a quarter century, Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, said Tuesday that there wasn't anybody as good' as Google at helping phone and computer users search the internet. The U.S. Department of Justice has accused Google its very name is synonymous with scouring the web -- of smothering competition by paying Apple, Verizon and other tech companies to make its search engine the first that users see when they open their devices. Google counters that it dominates the market because its search engine is better than the competition a position that Apple's Cue supported in his testimony Tuesday. Google also argues that users can, in any event, switch to other search engines with a couple of clicks. The antitrust case, the biggest since the Justice Department went
