Punjab's Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer came in the support of pace bowler Arshdeep Singh, who is being trolled for inadvertently dropping a catch during match between India and Pakistan
Arshdeep Singh can do with a warm hug from Chetan Sharma. Not from the current chairman of national selection committee but the wiry, whippy Chetan Sharma, who instead of becoming the "toast" had become the virtual "roast" of the nation 36 summers back just like it happened with Punjab lad on fateful Sunday night. Coincidentally, in case of Chetan, that match was also played in the UAE but not at the newly-constructed gigantic concrete structure that Dubai International Stadium is but the more informal Sharjah Cricket Stadium where VIP ticket holders could eavesdrop on the adjacent dressing room chatter or drop in a handwritten note with a landline number. Chetan intended to bowl a yorker to Javed Miandad, who was the 'King of Sharjah' back then and it became a full-toss. Back in those Doordarshan days, it used to be basic coverage and only now that IPL matches have been shown live from at Sharjah Stadium, we realise that it is a ridiculously small ground where sixes can be hit for

Pakistan set up a second showdown against arch-rivals India in as many weeks with a record 155-run win over Hong Kong in a must-win Asia Cup match here on Friday. Mohammad Rizwan had to work hard for his 78 off 57 balls as Pakistan got a much-needed final flourish to post 193 for two against Hong Kong. Hong Kong were simply blown away in the run-chase with Pakistani attack proving to be too good for them. Their innings folded up for just 38 in 10.4 overs, sending Pakistan into the Super 4s as the second placed team from Group A. It was Pakistan's biggest win in the shortest format. Pakistan will meet India, who topped Group A, on Sunday. Hong Kong had shown a bit of potential with the bat against India but they simply surrendered to the Pakistani attack. It was a procession after Naseem Shah struck twice in the third over of the innings. Then it was the turn of the spinners, Shadab Khan (4/8) and Mohammad Nawaz (3/5), to do the damage as they shared seven wickets. Shadab's googl
An office-bearer of a right-wing group has filed a police complaint against a businessman from Bareilly whose pictures showing him wearing the jersey of the Pakistani cricket team during a recent India-Pakistan match in Dubai has gone viral on the social media. The family members of the businessman have, however, claimed that the act of wearing the Pakistani team's jersey was merely a prank. "The matter has been brought to our notice but since the incident occurred outside the country, further action will be taken in accordance with directions from the government," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bareilly Satyarth Aniruddha Pankaj told PTI on Wednesday. Pictures of Sanyam Jaiswal, a resident of Civil Lines in Bareilly, standing outside the stadium in Dubai wearing the jersey of the Pakistani team have gone viral on social media platforms. The pictures have angered a section of people back home. Jaiswal's family members said the he arrived late at the stadium on Sunday and co
India and Pakistan have been fined 40 percent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in their opening Group A match of the Asia Cup. Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam's sides were ruled to be two overs short of their respective targets after time allowances were taken into consideration. "In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," said the ICC in a statement. "Both captains pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing." On-field umpires Masudur Rahman and Ruchira Pilliyaguruge, third umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel levelled the charges. India had won the high-profile game by five wickets, courtes
India's flamboyant all-rounder Hardik Pandya has jumped eight places to a best-ever fifth position on the latest ICC T20I all-rounder rankings after his excellent outing against Pakistan in the Asia Cup here. Hardik claimed 3/25 and made 33 not out from just 17 balls, showing how vital his impact will be in India's T20 World Cup campaign later in the year in Australia. Elsewhere, Afghanistan's blistering start to the Asia Cup tournament has not gone unnoticed, with a number of players rewarded in the updated rankings. An ICC release said Rashid Khan's push for the No.1 bowler position has been helped with a two-spot jump to third (708 points), over fellow leg-spinners Adil Rashid and Adam Zampa. Left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (716) is next in Rashid's sights, though Josh Hazlewood (792) boasts a strong margin at the top of the list. Rashid's compatriot Mujeeb Ur Rahman meanwhile has entered the top- 10 with a seven-spot move up the rankings (660), currently edged out for ei

Video footage of BCCI secretary Jay Shah appearing to turn down an offer to wave the national flag after India beat Pakistan in a thrilling cricket match at the Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday has sparked a controversy, with Opposition leaders taking a dig at him. However, Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi defended Shah in a tweet, saying "staying neutral as ACC (Asian Cricket Council) president doesn't at any point mean being disrespectful to any nation's flag, especially your own. So trolls, sit down". Chaturvedi's tweet came minutes after she herself attacked Shah on Twitter, saying the tricolour in hand is a symbol of the resolve and loyalty of Indians to the nation and to "dismiss it in this way is an insult to the country's 133 crore population". Several Congress leaders slammed Jay Shah, who is Union Home Minister Amit Shah's son. The crucial partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya helped India defeat arch-rivals
Hardik Pandya would have "fancied" his chances even if India needed 15 runs rather than the seven that they scored in the final over to win their Asia Cup opener against Pakistan. Pandya had a dream game, first taking 3 for 25 in 4 overs and then finishing the match with a six off Mohammed Nawaz, having scored 33 invaluable runs off 17 balls. "In a chase like this, you always plan over-by-over. I always knew that there is one young bowler (Naseem or Shahnawaz Dahani) and also one left-arm spinner (Nawaz)," Pandya said after the match. "We only needed 7 off the last over but even if we needed 15, I'd have fancied myself. I know the bowler is under more pressure than me in the 20th over. I try to keep things simple," said India's No. 1 all-rounder. As far as bowling is concerned, Hardik knew that he needed to mix the short balls and induce batters into making mistakes. "In bowling, it's important to assess the situations and use your weapons. For me, bowling short and the hard lengt
