Unprecedented job creation recorded under Modi govt: Surjit Bhalla

Former India's executive director at IMF Surjit Bhalla on Sunday said that on an average basis, an unprecedented number of jobs are being created under the Narendra Modi government, with the number touching about 10 million over the last 7-8 years. Bhalla further said the least number of jobs were created during 2004-2013 (UPA government period), and it was then that the term 'jobless growth' came about. "The job creation by the Modi government has been the highest on record. "Never before in Indian history have so many jobs been created on an average basis. Something close to 10 million jobs over the last 7-8 years," he told PTI in a video interview. Bhalla, a former member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), asserted that the maximum number of jobs were created during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Modi. Odisha govt approves seven key projects with Rs 80,125 crore investment

The Odisha government has approved seven key projects with an investment of Rs 80,125 crore in different sectors, an official said. The projects received the state government's nod at a High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday. These investments are expected to create job opportunities for 24,552 people in various sectors, including steel, green energy, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals, the official said. These projects are spread over Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Ganjam, and Bhadrak districts, he said. Granules Life Sciences Private Limited, a leading producer of paracetamol in India, has proposed to set up its pharmaceutical unit at Tata SEZ, Gopalpur in Ganjam district. The company aims to produce 4 billion units of paracetamol, metformin, ibuprofen and other pharma products, for which it will pump in Rs 1,100 crore in the Ganjam plant, generating jobs for around 1,500 people. Hiring of freshers is likely to decline in the current fiscal as major IT companies look to freeze intake of freshers, according to a report. In its hiring outlook for fresh IT/engineering graduates in the fiscal year 2023-24, TeamLease Digital said that 1.55 lakh freshers are likely to be hired in the IT/Tech sector this fiscal compared to 2.3 lakh freshers in the previous financial year. With approximately 1.5 million engineering graduates actively seeking IT/Tech roles, muted market sentiments and intensified skills evaluation mechanisms have created a turbulent landscape, it added. 274,000 posts vacant in Railways, over 170,000 in safety category: RTI

More than 2.74 lakh posts in the Railways are lying vacant as of this month, with over 1.7 lakh of them in the safety category alone, the national transporter has said in response to an RTI query. In its reply to the questions filed by Chandra Shekhar Gaur, a Madhya Pradesh-based Right to Information (RTI) Act activist, the Railways said 2,74,580 posts are vacant in Group C category, including Level 1 or entry-level staff. This includes 1,77,924 vacancies in the safety category, it said. "The total number of non-gazetted posts vacant i.e. Group-C (including Level-1) in Indian Railways, as available in this office, as on 01.06.2023 (provisional) is: 2,74,580," the ministry said. On the safety category, it said there are more than 9.82 lakh posts of which over 8.04 lakh are filled.
