'Bandh' observed in Latur against police action on Maratha quota agitators

A 'bandh' was observed in Latur on Saturday against police action on Maratha quota agitators in Jalna a day earlier, which had left some 40 policemen and many protestors injured as well as arson resulting in damage to several buses. On Friday, police had resorted to baton charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse a violent mob in Antarwali Sarathi on Dhule-Solapur road that allegedly refused to let authorities shift a man on hunger strike to the hospital. The shutdown, which was called by the Maratha Kranti Morcha following a meeting of the outfit at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharj Chowk here at 10am, saw shops and other establishments downing shutters and private and state-run MSRTC buses off the roads. Most schools and colleges too were shut during the day, officials said. A motorcycle rally was organised by the outfits supporting the demand for reservations for Marathas in jobs and education, they said. Protests were also held in Renapur and Aurad Shahajani in Nilanga tehsil, a

Maharashtra BJP unit poses questions to Rahul Gandhi over Adani group

The Maharashtra unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday calling him childish over the latter's tirade against industrialist Gautam Adani and his conglomerate, and linking them to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP said Gandhi should explain why the Congress-led government in office before 2014 at the Centre had given land parcels to the Adani group. In a long post on X (formerly Twitter), the state BJP said, Rahul Gandhi who has a childish brain should tell why the Congress government before 2014 had given key land parcels to the Adani group. The earlier Congress government had given several awards to the Adani group, it should be communicated to the people. Why did (NCP founder) Sharad Pawar oppose the Congress demand for JPC (probe in Adani group affairs) which was based on Hindenberg report? Why did Congress government in Maharashtra in 2013 awarded 660 MW Tiroda power plant to the Adani group? the party asked. Earlier in

If NCP could be with Shiv Sena, why can't it be with BJP: Sunil Tatkare

If the Nationalist Congress Party could be in an alliance with the Shiv Sena despite ideological differences, then why it can't join hands with the BJP, asked senior NCP leader Sunil Tatkare from the Ajit Pawar faction on Saturday. Nine NCP leaders, including Ajit Pawar, tied up the BJP and took oath as ministers last month after breaking away from the Sharad Pawar-founded party. As a constituent of the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, the undivided NCP had aligned with the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, which later split following a rebellion by Eknath Shinde. Back in 2019, we fought against the BJP and Shiv Sena. When the results (assembly polls) were out, Sharad Pawar took the initiative and formed MVA. We then formed the government under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, said Tatkare at a party event here. Despite ideological differences, we were in an alliance with the Shiv Sena. Then what is the problem if we are now with the BJP, he ...

No stay on MHADA lottery, HC rejects plea seeking reservation for SBC

The Bombay High Court has refused to pass any urgent orders on a plea seeking for the Special Backward Class (SBC) to be included as a reserved category in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development (MHADA) lottery for housing allotments. The petitioner, Deepal Shahu Shirvale, had sought that the lottery, to be declared on Monday, be stayed pending hearing of the plea or for the SBC to be included in the reserved category. A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale in their order on August 11 refused to pass any orders granting urgent interim relief on the plea, noting that there was no urgency. MHADA's advocate Uday Warunjikar opposed the plea and said the housing body has the power to frame rules and regulations. He said there are 11 reserved categories at present and the SBC category is not one of them. The bench while refusing any urgent relief observed the plea has not challenged the MHADA rules. We do not know how we can require the insertion of a special

Fadnavis gave up chance to install BJP mayor in BMC for Shiv Sena: Shinde

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said Devendra Fadnavis gave up the opportunity to install a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mayor in Mumbai after the 2017 civic polls for the sake of the Shiv Sena at his request. But Uddhav Thackeray repaid this gesture by severing the alliance with the BJP two years later, the CM said on Saturday at a conclave of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) workers here. Shinde also sought to assuage concerns of his party colleagues after the Nationalist Congress Party's group led by Ajit Pawar joined his government a fortnight ago. Certain equations have to be formed in politics. Looking at the development (carried out by his government), Ajit Pawar too has backed our government, he said. In June 2022, Shinde and 39 other Shiv Sena MLAs revolted against Uddhav Thackeray, then chief minister and president of the undivided Shiv Sena. One of the main reasons cited by them was that Ajit Pawar, as finance minister, did not allocate funds for their ...
