BJP chief J P Nadda overhauls party's team of central office-bearers

BJP president J P Nadda rejigged the list of the party's central office-bearers on Saturday, bringing in a Pasmanda Muslim from Uttar Pradesh as one of its-vice presidents and accommodating its former Telangana unit chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar as a national general secretary. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dropped C T Ravi, a leader from Karnataka, and Dilip Saikia, a Lok Sabha MP from Assam, as its general secretaries, with sources indicating that they may be contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Former Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor, now a BJP MLC in Uttar Pradesh, has been made a vice-president, a decision seen to be part of the party's overtures to Pasmanda Muslims. Most of the office-bearers have been retained as vice-presidents, general secretaries and secretaries in the new list. There are 13 vice-presidents, nine general secretaries, including B L Santhosh as the in-charge of organisation, and 13 secretaries in the list. Former Union minist

Forced to cut food aid to millions globally because of funding crisis: UN

The United Nations has been forced to cut food, cash payments and assistance to millions of people in many countries because of a crippling funding crisis that has seen its donations plummet by about half as acute hunger is hitting record levels, a top official said Friday. Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme, told a news conference that at least 38 of the 86 countries where WFP operates have already seen cuts or plan to cut assistance soon including Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and West Africa. He said WFP's operating requirement is USD 20 billion to deliver aid to everyone in need, but it was aiming for between USD 10 billion and USD 14 billion, which was what the agency had received in the past few years. We're still aiming at that, but we have only so far this year gotten to about half of that, around USD 5 billion, Skau said. He said humanitarian needs were going through the roof in 2021 and 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukrain

J'khand monsoon session begins today, 3 important bills to be retabled

The monsoon session of the Jharkhand Assembly is set to commence on Friday, during which three important bills, which were earlier returned by the governor secretariat over "technical flaws", will be tabled again. On the other hand, the opposition BJP has decided to corner the government by raising the issues of "deteriorating" law and order situation in the state and unemployment. The ruling alliance and opposition BJP held separate legislature party meetings here on Thursday to chalk out strategies for the session, which will continue till August 4. The three bills that will be retabled are 'Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021', 'Jharkhand Definition of Local Persons and For Extending the Consequential, Social, Cultural and Other Benefits to Such Local Persons Bill, 2022', popularly known as the 1932 Khatiyan Bill, and 'OBC Reservation Bill'. These were returned by the then Governor Ramesh Bais, citing several technical issues. Congress, an ally of the JMM-led

BRS, Cong, AIMIM cut from same cloth, says Union Minister Kishan Reddy

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Wednesday said the ruling BRS, Congress and the AIMIM were cut from the same cloth as all three are "family-based and corrupt parties". Addressing reporters here, he said all the three parties had worked together earlier and they will do so again in future. Voting for one of them is like voting for others, the Telangana BJP president claimed. BJP is the only party that had never joined hands with these parties and it would not do so in the future, Reddy said, adding that BJP's fight against the three parties would intensify in the days to come. People should understand that the three parties had ruled the state either directly or indirectly and BJP is the alternative for the aspirations of Telangana statehood demand to be realized. He alleged that the AIMIM was indirectly ruling the state, holding the "steering" for the governments of either BRS or Congress. It is not surprising if the BRS signed on the no-confidence motion against the NDA governm

Rajya Sabha adjourned till 12 noon after spat between Chairman, Derek

The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for almost an hour on Monday following heated exchanges between Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and TMC's Derek O'Brien over the chair not mentioning the party affiliations of opposition members seeking a discussion on the Manipur issue. Dhankhar read out the names of the MPs and the political parties they are affiliated with while detailing the 11 notices received under rule 176, mostly from treasury benches, seeking short-duration discussions over violence in states ranging from Rajasthan to Manipur. But when he started to read out the notices received under rule 267 from MPs of opposition parties who sought to set aside the business of the day to take up the Manipur issue, he did not mention the party affiliations. O'Brien asked the chairman to also mention the parties of the MPs who had given notices under rule 267, just like he did for MPs giving notices under rule 176. Dhankhar asked O'Brien to take his seat but the TMC leader was not in a

Spain at risk of political gridlock as conservatives win without majority

Spain appears headed for political gridlock after Sunday's inconclusive national elections left parties on both the right and left without a clear path toward forging a new government. The conservative Popular Party won the elections, but it fell short of its hopes of scoring a much bigger victory and forcing the removal of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Instead, the party led by candidate Alberto Nunez Feijoo performed below the expectations of most campaign polls. Even though Sanchez's Socialists finished second, they and their allied parties celebrated the outcome as a victory since their combined forces gained slightly more seats than the PP and the far-right. The bloc that could likely support Sanchez totalled 172 seats; the right bloc behind Feijoo, 170. It was a Pyrrhic victory for the Popular Party, which is unable to form a government," said political analyst Vernica Fumanal, adding the conservatives will now have to reach out to the far-right, and even then it wo

Chirag Paswan accuses his uncle Pashupati Paras of tarnishing NDA's image

Former Lok Janshakti Party president Chirag Paswan on Sunday charged his uncle and Union minister Pashupati Kumar Paras with tarnishing the image of the NDA by questioning his entry into the BJP-led coalition. Talking to reporters here late in the evening, Chirag reminded his uncle of the welcome accorded to him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recent NDA meeting in Delhi. It is bewildering to hear him making such statements barely a few days after I was hugged by the PM in front of all. Such utterances give a bad name to the coalition, said Chirag, who is engaged in a tussle with his uncle to claim the legacy of his late father Ram Vilas Paswan. The prime minister had been a pillar of support when I was going through a hard phase following the death of my father. This is the reason why I never spoke against him even during the period I was not formally a part of the NDA," said Chirag whose party was split by Paras two years ago. He also said, It was because of the beautiful

Hun Sen's ruling party claims landslide win in Cambodian election

The ruling party of Cambodia's longtime Prime Minister Hun Sen claimed a landslide victory in Sunday's general election, an outcome that was virtually assured thanks to the suppression and intimidation of the opposition in a vote critics said made a farce of democracy. Six hours after polls closed, the National Election Committee said 84.6 per cent of eligible voters had cast ballots. Sok Eysan, spokesperson for Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party, said he believed his party captured 78-80 per cent of the total turnout. I have no results about the allocation of seats, but as of now but I can say that the ruling Cambodian People's Party has won a landslide victory, he told the Associated Press, although no official vote count had still been issued. The European Union, the United States and other Western countries had refused to send observers, saying the election lacked the conditions to be considered free and fair. That left international officials from Russia, China and Guinea-Bissa
