Delhi HC seeks police stand on wrestler Sushil Kumar's bail in murder case

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the stand of Delhi Police on a bail plea by Olympian Sushil Kumar in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. Justice Anup J Bhambhani issued notice to Delhi Police and the kin of the deceased, and asked them to file a status report and a reply, respectively. Noting that the Supreme Court had cancelled the bail granted to Kumar by the high court in August last year, the judge remarked, "I think you are being ambitious." "Once the Supreme Court has taken a view, what do you expect from me?" the court asked. The counsel for the accused said the bail plea should be considered since all public witnesses have been examined in the trial. A Delhi court on Friday dismissed Olympian Sushil Kumar's bail plea in the murder case of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar at the Chhatrasal Stadium here. Additional Sessions Judge Sushil Kumar was hearing the bail application filed by the celebrated Olympian wrestler. Kumar and others are accused of fatally assaulting Dhankar and his friends over an alleged property dispute in May 2021. According to the post-mortem report, Dhankar had suffered cerebral damage from the impact of a blunt object. Two of his friends were also injured in the alleged assault. Kumar was arrested in May 2021 and a sessions court granted him a week's interim bail for his knee surgery on July 19, 2023. The trial court, in October 2022, framed charges against Kumar under the Indian Penal code (IPC) sections dealing with murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation and rioting with a deadly weapon. A Delhi court Wednesday framed charges against Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar and 17 others in the Chhatrasal Stadium murder case, setting the stage for their trial. Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand framed charges against Kumar and other accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy. A detailed order is awaited. Kumar along with others is accused of allegedly assaulting former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar and his friends in the parking lot of the city's Chhatrasal stadium on May 4, 2021 over an alleged property dispute. Dhankar later succumbed to injuries and, according to the post-mortem report, he died due to cerebral damage resulting from blunt object impact. The Delhi Police had arrested the wrestler on May 23. The sportsman has been lodged in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.
