Toyota's 14 auto plants shut down due to computer issues in Japan

All 28 vehicle assembly lines at Toyota's 14 auto plants in Japan shut down Tuesday over a problem in its computer system that deals with incoming auto parts. The automaker doesn't believe the problem was caused by a cyberattack but the cause is still under investigation, said spokeswoman Sawako Takeda. It's unclear when the lines will be back up. Toyota declined to say what models being produced might be affected. The shutdown comes after a shortage of computer chips and other auto parts stalled production in Asian nations affected by social restrictions over the coronavirus pandemic. The chips shortage woes had only recently started to ease for Japan's top automaker, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid, Lexus luxury brand.

Toyota Japan announces battery electric vehicle initiatives amid criticism

Toyota plans to make an all solid-state battery as part of its ambitious plans for battery electric vehicles, the company said Tuesday, amid mounting criticism Japan's top automaker needs to do more to fight climate change. Toyota Motor Corp. aims for a commercial solid-state battery as soon as 2027. Charging time, one of the main drawbacks of electric vehicles, will get shortened to 10 minutes or less, the company said in a statement. With the evolution of the vehicle's operating system, the next-generation battery EV will also enable customization of the driving feel,' with a focus on acceleration, turning and stopping, it said. EV owners usually have charging stations in their homes and keep their cars plugged in overnight to recharge. That's one of the main reasons Toyota has long insisted that hybrids are a better solution. A hybrid recharges as the car runs. Toyota President Koji Sato has said the company must play catchup after falling behind in the EV sector. The automaker

Toyota to build $50 mn lab to test electric, hybrid vehicles batteries

Toyota says it will spend nearly USD 50 million to build a vehicle battery testing laboratory at its North American research centre in Michigan. The company said Thursday that the lab in York Township south of Ann Arbor will test batteries made for hybrid and electric vehicles at a new factory in North Carolina, as well as from battery suppliers. No new jobs will be created because Toyota will reassign workers from other areas and provide training as needed. The company says the lab is expected to begin work in 2025 and could be expanded as more electric vehicles are made. The lab will do performance, quality and durability testing, as well as testing of charging capabilities. This new facility also enables us to experiment and pursue new opportunities as technology and business needs advance, Jordan Choby, group vice president of powertrain, said in a statement. Last month Toyota said it would invest another USD 2.1 billion in the battery factory that's under construction near .

Toyota debuts hydrogen Corolla race car in a bid to shift to green energy

In a sprawling circuit near Mount Fuji, a humble Corolla running on liquid hydrogen has made its racing debut, part of a move to bring the futuristic technology into the racing world and to demonstrate Toyota's resolve to develop green vehicles. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, resplendent in a fire-resistant racing uniform, was all smiles as he prepared to buzz around the circuit in the hydrogen-fuelled Corolla. This is a world first for a liquid hydrogen car to race. We hope it will offer another option in the fight against global warming. To bring everyone smiles, I want to go one lap, even one second, more, said Toyoda, a former CEO of Toyota, grandson of the automaker's founder and a licensed race driver himself. The hydrogen Corolla race car won't be turning up at your dealer anytime soon. The Super Taikyu 24-hour race at Fuji Speedway was just a test for the technology, Toyota officials said. Unlike electric vehicles, it has a combustion engine, but it burns liquid hydrogen ins

Data leak: Around 2 mn vehicles in Japan were at risk in decade-long breach

A decade-long data breach in Toyota's much-touted online service put some information on more than 2 million vehicles at risk, the Japanese automaker said Friday. Spanning from January 2012 to April 2023, the problem with Toyota's cloud-based Connected service pertains only to vehicles in Japan, said spokesperson Hideaki Homma. The Connected service reminds owners to get maintenance checks and links to streaming entertainment and provides help during emergencies. It can call for help after a crash or locate a car that's been stolen. No issues arising from the breach have been reported so far. Although there is no evidence any information was leaked, copied or misused due to the breach, the data at risk includes: the vehicle identification number, which is separate from the license plate; the location of the vehicle and at what time it was there; and video footage taken by the vehicle, known as the drive recorder in Japan. Such information cannot be used to identify individual owne

Toyota's new president Koji Sato vows to step up electric vehicle push

Toyota's new president Koji Sato has promised what he called an aggressive shift on electrification, while acknowledging criticism that Japan's top automaker has fallen behind in actual volumes of electric vehicles sold compared to its rivals. We like to see that as people cheering Toyota on, to play catchup in electric cars, Sato told reporters Friday at Toyota Motor Corp.'s Tokyo headquarters. If we look at in practical terms of the situation today, we have done a great deal in reducing carbon emissions, he said, defending the automaker's record on other gas-sipping technologies. Toyota is a leader in hybrids, which have both a gasoline engine and electric motor, and Sato stressed that different markets have varying powertrain needs, with emerging markets being slower to adopt pure electric vehicles. But he said pure electric vehicles allow for more software functions because of their connectivity and other features, stressing that Toyota's electric vehicles would highlight ...
