COVID-19: India records highest ever spike of 2.17 lakh cases

New Delhi, Apr 16 (ANI): COVID-19 situation continues to deteriorate across the country as there is no holding back to surge in cases. A day after daily cases breached 2-lakh mark, in April 15 India reported 2,17,353 new cases. Country's COVID caseload is at 1,42,91,917 with 15,69,743 active cases. 1,18,302 people were discharged in last 24 hours taking total recoveries to 1,25,47,866. With 1,185 new deaths, death toll has mounted to 1,74,308. According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 26,34,76,625 samples tested for COVID-19. The COVID vaccination drive is underway across country. So far 11,72,23,509 COVID vaccine jabs have been inoculated.

COVID: CM Yediyurappa chairs emergency meeting after highest spike in cases

Bengaluru, Apr 16 (ANI): Amid continuous surge in COVID-19 cases, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa held an emergency meeting at his residence on April 16. State Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar and other senior officials were present at the meeting. Karnataka reported highest single-day spike with 14,738 COVID cases and 66 deaths in last 24 hours.

Dr Harsh Vardhan interacts with AIIMS doctors

New Delhi, Apr 16 (ANI): Amid deteriorating COVID-19 situation in the country, Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan visited All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on April 16. Health Minister will visit various healthcare facilities over next few days to assess and further scale-up arrangements. AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria and other doctors of the hospital were present.

Niranjani Akhara exits Kumbh Mela amid rising COVID cases

Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Apr 16 (ANI): Seeing the rise of COVID cases, the Niranjani Akhada announced its intentions to limit their participation in Kumbh Mela till April 17. The development comes after several of the saints testing positive for coronvirus. Niranjani Akhada secretary Mahant Ravindra Puri said the 'Maha Snan' has concluded, and keeping in mind the continuous spread of COVID-19, the akhada will not participate in the event any further. However, Kumbh Mela Inspector General Sanjay Gunjyal said the decision is limited to the jurisdiction of the akhada and the ongoing Kumbh Mela will continue until further orders. More than 1000 devotees have tested positive for coronavirus in last few days, with images and videos of massive gathering at Har Ki Pauri attracting criticism amid the second wave of pandemic in the country.

'Lockdown' and 'strictness' two solutions for COVID-19: Anil Vij

Ambala (Haryana), Apr 16 (ANI): Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij has termed lockdown and stringent enforcement of guidelines as the two solutions to curb the spread of COVID-19. Vij, however, said the state government doesn't want to adopt the lockdown method, and thus want the restrictions imposed in the state to be enforced strictly. The Health Minister said the government is ready to face the dissatisfaction of the people over stringent actions, but cannot see heap of dead bodies due to COVID-19. Haryana on April 15 recorded its highest single day spike of 5858 new cases, pushing the active infection over 30,000.

COVID lockdown: 'Migrants in dilemma,' reports Ranchi's govt control room

Ranchi (Jharkhand), Apr 15 (ANI): The country is reeling under second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions have been imposed differently in several states. Amid this, government control room set up in Ranchi for counselling migrant labourers has reported an increase in queries as migrants are in dilemma. Control room head, Shika Pankaj informed ANI that migrants are not sure about coming to their hometown or staying back amid restrictions in several states. "The fear in them is evident but they are not able to take a decision," Shika added.

Deceased COVID patient's kin allegedly vandalise hospital over 'negligence'

Bhagalpur (Bihar), Apr 15 (ANI): Family members of a COVID-19 patient, who died in ICU ward on April 14, allegedly vandalised Mayaganj hospital in Bihar's Bhagalpur. Narrating the incident, patient's nephew Pravin said, "My uncle lost his life due to negligence by doctors and nurses." Further details are awaited.

MP govt not hiding data on COVID deaths: State Health Minister

Bhopal (MP), Apr 14 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Health Minister Prabhuram Choudhary asserted that the state government is not hiding any COVID data and the correct figures are updated daily. "Apart from COVID19 infected bodies, suspected bodies are also being cremated as per COVID protocol. We are not hiding any data, correct figures are being updated every day," added Prabhuram Choudhary.

COVID blues: Maha govt's restrictions hampering daily wagers of film industry

Mumbai, Apr 14 (ANI): Amid increasing COVID-19 cases in state, Maharashtra government on April 13 announced a series of strict restrictions in the state till May 1 including the imposition of Section 144. Bollywood industry is also feeling the heat. According to All Indian Cine Workers Association president, the industry is bearing loses as spot boys and other daily wagers have returned to their hometown due to no work. "We support lockdown, but there has to be a way for us. Government talks about others but not daily wagers in our industry," he said. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on April 13 announced a series of strict restrictions in the state till May 1 including the imposition of Section 144 from Wednesday in view of rising COVID-19 cases but said he will not term the new restrictions as "lockdown".

'Situation not good': COVID patients struggle to get beds at Patna hospital

Patna (Bihar), Apr 14 (ANI): As second wave of the coronavirus is testing the country, families and attendants of COVID-19 patients are struggling to get beds at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna. One of the doctors at the hospital said that the "situation is not good" as most of the patients arriving at the hospital are critical. Dr Ajay Kumar Sinha said, "Situation is not good, we are receiving much more patients than we did the last time. Most of the patients we get are critical and need oxygen support." Currently there are 20,148 active cases in the state.

States need to provide doses to vaccination centres in timely manner: Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on April 14 said that COVID vaccines are in sufficient amount in the country and state governments need to deploy the doses at the vaccination centres in time. "There is no shortage of vaccines and Government of India gives vaccines to every state. It is job of states to provide doses to vaccination centres in time bound manner with meticulous planning," said Harsh Vardhan. He also said that production of Remdesivir, the anti-drug for COVID-19, has increased and strict actions will be taken against those who'll try to do black marketing of it.

Class 10 students to be promoted on basis of internal assessment: Education Minister

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in a press conference informed that the government has decided to promote the Class 10 students on the basis of the internal assessment and postpone the examinations of Class 12th students. For Class 10th students, he said, "if a student isn't satisfied with the assessment then he/she can appear for exam once the situation is normal."

TMC is anti-Dalit: JP Nadda

Purba Bardhaman (West Bengal), Apr 14 (ANI): During a public meeting at West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman, BJP chief JP Nadda pointed at CM Mamata Banerjeee for not commenting on 'anti-Dalit' statement by a TMC leader. "Today is Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar's 130th birth anniversary... Just now, a TMC leader used an offending word for Dalit brothers that I can't say here. I am sad by seeing that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not yet condemned it. This is TMC's anti-Dalit face and we should understand this," said JP Nadda. TMC leader Sujata Mondal Khan made controversial remarks against Dalits as she equated them with beggars.

Promote Class 12th students as well on basis of internal assessment: Sisodia to Centre

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on April 14 urged Union Government to promote Class 12 students on the basis of internal assessment just the way 10th class students have been given permission according to new circular by Education Ministry of India. "I am happy that Class 10 exams are being cancelled and dates are being rescheduled for class 12 exams. Like Class 10 students, I appeal to the govt to promote Class 12 students on the basis of internal assessment," said Delhi's Deputy CM. "Board Exams for Class 10th cancelled and 12th postponed. Results of Class 10th will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board. Class 12th exams will be held later, the situation will be reviewed on 1st June by the Board," according to Education Ministry in view of rising COVID cases.

CM Yogi chairs meeting with COVID-19 management Team-11 after highest single-day spike

Lucknow (UP), Apr 12 (ANI): In the view of increasing COVID-19 cases, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on April 12 chaired a meeting with the officers of the COVID-19 management, Team-11. Uttar Pradesh reported 15,353 fresh COVID cases in past 24 hours. Fresh cases took the active tally to 71,241. The total death count has reached to 9,152. The government has imposed night curfew in parts of Uttar Pradesh on April 10.

COVID: 'Only 2% beds are occupied,' informs Satyendar Jain

New Delhi, Apr 12 (ANI): In wake of the rising COVID cases in the national capital, Delhi government is planning to increase the quantity of beds for COVID patients. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain informed that only 2% beds are occupied. Satyendar Jain said, "We added 5,000 more beds last week and will add more. At present, there are 5,525 beds in Delhi. 190 beds are occupied which amounts to 2%. We have also requested central govt to increase beds to their current tally of 1,090." Delhi reported 10,774 new cases and 48 deaths in the last 24 hours. Total caseload of the national capital stood at 7,25,197.

Bomb hurled in North 24 Parganas, TMC and BJP accuse each other

North 24 Parganas (WB), Apr 12 (ANI): Amid ongoing state assembly elections, violence has been everyday's site in West Bengal. Continuing the violence spree, a bomb was hurled in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas on the night of April 11. Both the parties passed on the blames on each other. Police is investigating the matter.

Kumbh Mela 2021: Niranjani Akhada sadhus take holy dip in Haridwar

Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Apr 12 (ANI): On the occasion of the second shahi snan in Kumbh, Niranjani Akhada sadhus took a holy dip in river Ganga at Har Ki Pauri Ghat in Uttarakhand's Haridwar. Sadhus defy COVID SOPs during shahi snan. General public was allowed to take a dip till 7am. The first bath was held on March 11 on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Uttarakhand reported 1,333 new cases on April 11, taking the active caseload to 1,08,812.

Tika Utsav: Manipur CM receives 1st dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Imphal (Manipur), Apr 12 (ANI): Chief Minister N Biren Singh received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on April 11 at the launch of 'Tika Utsav' at Imphal's Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. "Took my 1st dose of COVID-19 vaccine at JNIMS during the launching of Tika Utsav (11th-14th April 2021). I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Stay safe from the second wave. Together, let us make our State and the Country COVID-19 free," the Chief Minister tweeted. Meanwhile, the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 10 crore mark on April 11.

Budding scientists ready with Rover to represent India at NASA challenge 2021

Cuttack (Odisha), Apr 12 (ANI): Cuttack-based Navonmesh Prasar Student Astronomy Team (NaPSAT), comprising of 10 school students, designed a rover to exhibit it at Nasa Human Rover Exploration Challenge 2021. "The rover has been designed for Artemis Mission 2024 (Moon mission) where the first woman and next man will be sent to Moon. The rover is capable of travelling on different kinds of martian terrains," a member of NaPSAT said in Cuttack yesterday.
