Justice D Y Chandrachud is a sitting judge at the Supreme court of India. On October 10, 2022 he was recommended as the second most senior judge of the apex court for the position of Chief Justice of India (CJI) by the current CJI U U Lalit.

Early life and Education 
 
Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud was born in Mumbai on November 11, 1959. His father Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud was the 16th and the longest serving CJI (from February 22, 1978 &ndash;July 11, 1985). D Y Chandrachud studied BA with Economics Honours from St Stephen&#39;s College, New Delhi. He completed LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University in 1982. He obtained LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA in 1986. 
 
Career 
 
After his graduation from Harvard, Chandrachud practiced law at the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. In June 1998, he was designated as a senior advocate by the Bombay High Court. He served as the additional solicitor general of India from 1998 till his appointment as permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court in March 2000. In October of 2013, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, he held the position until his appointment as a Supreme Court in May 2016. 
 
Judgements 
 
Justice Chandrachud penned some notable judgements during his tenure at the Supreme Court including: 
 
The K.S. Puttaswamy v Union of India case, where Chandrachud was the sole dissenter, held that the Aadhaar was passed unconstitutionally. 
&nbsp; 
Chandrachud was on the bench that heard the Sabarimala Temple Entry case, he held that &lsquo;the exclusion of women between the ages of 10-50 years from Sabarimala Temple violated constitutional morality.&rsquo; 
&nbsp; 
In the Romila Thapar v Union of India case regarding the arrest of 5 human rights activists in the Bhima Koregaon case, Chandrachud dissented and stated &lsquo;that the issue was whether the arrests violated the accused of their fundamental rights to free expression and personal liberty guaranteed by Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.&rsquo; 
&nbsp; 
He was also on the five-judge bench that heard the Ayodhya title dispute case.
