Indore-based industrialists were hopeful of benefiting from the gas pipeline passing through nearby Manglia.

However, their hopes were dashed, as GAIL has not been able to agree with the industrialists on the quantum of gas, even as the state's share has been diverted to Gujarat.

Over and above the delay in commissioning the gas pipeline, GAIL has not yet given a scheduled date for the delivery of gas to Indore's industrialists. They had drawn up their expansion plans in anticipation of receiving gas and the delay is hurting them.

In February 2001, GAIL had discussed the issue of finalising the gas pipeline and supplying gas to the industrial areas of Dewas, Indore and Pithampur. Thereafter, in a meeting held in December 2003, GAIL promised to complete the project by the end 2004. However, the delay in starting the project lingered on despite the representations from the industrialists of Dewas, Indore and Pithampur.

So far, 11 industrialists of Pithampur, three of Dewas and six of Malanpur could get registered with GAIL, ignoring all the industrialists of Indore.

Besides, GAIL has agreed to supply only 25 per cent of the gas as against the quantum of gas supply GAIL has agreed upon earlier. Thus, out of 0.1149 million cubic meter that GAIL agreed to supply, Pithampur would get only 0.1016 mcm and Dewas 0.0133 mcm.

Besides, of the 2.4 mcm of gas that GAIL had agreed to supply to Indore, about 2.3 mcm would be diverted to Gujarat. The new connections would be considered only after 2008 and till then, spot gas would be supplied to industrialists at market rate, which is available at current market rates.
