Comment passed by his colleagues did not go well with a CRPF jawan who gunned down four of his co-jawans and critically wounded another in restive Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh past midnight.
The jawan, identified as Deep Kumar Tiwari hails from Lucknow and has not been in a stable mental condition, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Narendra Khare said. The preliminary interrogation suggested that comment passed by the jawans led Tiwari to act in such a heinous way. Armed with an Insas rifle, Tiwari entered barrack of the camp located in Aranpur—about 60 km from Dantewada—and opened fire at colleagues who were sleeping. The jawans did not get time to react. Khare said three jawans died on the spot itself while one succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The injured jawan had been admitted to a government hospital where his condition is reported to be critical.
The jawans were posted in the F company of the 111th battalion in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed in the Maoist infested pocket of Aranpur. Besides F, D company of the battalion is also deployed in the area. The victims have been identified as Head Constable Chandan Singh from Sabarkantha (Gujarat), Constables Ramesh Kumar (Bhiwani, Haryana), Aniruddh Kumar (Gorakhpur, UP) and P L Sahoo (Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh).
