Banks in Haryana register 45.3% growth

| While speaking about the performance of banks in Haryana under various key-parameters of the banking during review period from July 2005 to June 2006, in 97th State Level Bankers Committee meet, K Raghuraman, executive director of Punjab National Bank said 90 new branches of Commercial Banks and Regional Rural Banks were opened in the state during the review period, thus raising the total number of branches from 1645 to 1735. |
| He said priority sector advances of the state increased by Rs 6,025 crore or 47 per cent from Rs 12,822 crore to Rs 18,847 crore during the review period. |
| In the agriculture sector, the advances increased from Rs 6,456 crore in June 2005 to Rs 8,401 crore in June 2006 during the review period, thus showing an increase of Rs 1,945 crore or 30.12 per cent which is commendable. |
| Advances under the weaker sector registered a significant growth of Rs 740 crore or 36 per cent from Rs 2,016 crore to Rs 2,801 crore during the review period. |
| Also, advances to small scale industries in Haryana witnessed a growth of 20.8 per cent or Rs 606 crore i.e. from Rs 2,913 crore in June 2005 to Rs 3,519 crore in June 2006. |
| He added, "In respect of national goals, the achievement of banks was quite satisfactory as ratio of priority sector to the total credit was 62 per cent against the national goal of 40 per cent. Banking system has not only achieved the target under priority sector lending but the same has been surpassed by adequate margin. The credit to the agriculture sector constituted 27 per cent of the total credit as against the national goal of 18 per cent.' |
| Speaking on the occasion, Prem Prashant, IAS, chief secretary of Haryana, said, "It is the service sector, which has lot of employment opportunities and a revolution in the knowledge sector is taking place. Thirty-seven SEZs have been approved, Nano-City and Education City projects are under implementation." |
