As the role of chief data officer (CDO) continues to gain traction within organisations, a survey by Gartner, Inc. found that these data and analytics leaders are proving to be a linchpin of digital business transformation. The third annual Gartner Chief Data Officer survey covered 287 CDOs, chief analytics officers and other high-level data and analytics leaders worldwide. “While the early crop of CDOs was focused on data governance, data quality and regulatory drivers, today’s CDOs are also delivering tangible business value, and enabling a data-driven culture,” said Valerie Logan, research director.

The survey found that support for the CDO role and business function is rising globally. A majority of respondents reported holding the formal title of CDO, revealing a steady increase over 2016 (57 per cent in 2017, from 50 per cent in 2016). Also 47 per cent organisations reported an office of the CDO implemented (formally or informally) in 2017, as against 23 per cent in 2016.

Connected car concerns

Ninety-three per cent consumers believe they do not own or do not know if they own a connected car and 49 per cent do not own and do not plan on buying one, according to new survey by Irdeto. However, the Irdeto Global Connected Car Survey across Canada, China, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US showed that 85 per cent believe any connected car has the potential to be targeted by a cyberattack. While the high percentage of consumers who say they do not own a connected car may be a result of not understanding the components that make up a connected vehicle, it is also possible that the awareness of safety risks and cyberattacks could be a major influencer in the reluctance of consumers to purchase a connected car.

Of the consumers who plan on purchasing a vehicle, 53 per cent are likely to research the car’s ability to protect itself from a cyberattack, the survey added.
