Export of spices has suffered a serious setback in the first quarter of the current financial year though there were record exports in 2004-05.
 
According to latest estimates of the Spices Board, total export in April"�June 2005 stood at 90,278 tonne at Rs 538.22 crore ($123.41). compared to 101,337 tonne of exports worth Rs 600.89 crore reported in the same period of last year.
 
Exports fell by 5,121 tonne to 29,661 tonne in June alone at Rs 186.65 crore. Exports decreased by 11 per cent in terms of quantity and 10 per cent in value terms in the first quarter of the current fiscal compared to the first quarter of 2004, the Spices Board said.
 
Spice oils and oleoresins, including mint products, contributed to 40 per cent of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 22 per cent followed by turmeric and pepper, which contributed 8 per cent and 6 per cent respectively of the total exports. Chilli contributed 41 per cent of the total exports in 2004-05.
 
Total earnings from exports in the last fiscal was Rs 2,200 crore and total exports was 335,448 tonne. During the last year, earnings from exports grew by 15 per cent while the board's target was Rs 2,000 crore. The downward trend in the exports was mainly due to the decrease in the export of red chilli.
 
In April"�June 2005, total export of chilli was 34,000 tonne at Rs 115.98 crore while it was 39,884 tonne at Rs 145.28 crore in 2004.
 
The export of cardamom (large), ginger, turmeric, garlic, nutmeg, mace, curry powder, tamarind, asafoetida and cassia are higher in terms of quantity and value.
 
However, in the case of spice oils and oleoresins, there was an increase in quantity of exports. Exports of all other spices declined both in terms of quantity and value compared to last year.
 
The Spice Board had set an export target of 250,000 tonne at Rs 2,100 crore for the current fiscal. Till now, the Board has achieved 36 per cent of the target in terms of quantity and 26 per cent in value terms.
 
Export of coriander has also fallen in both quantity and value during April"�June. Coriander export was just halved at 7250 tonne at Rs 197.6 crore.
 
However, export of turmeric increased by 2,500 tonne at 14,500 and earnings were increased slightly to Rs 45.45 crore.
 
There was also a slight increase in the export of spice oils and oleoresins during April"�June to 1,425 tonne valued at Rs 117 crore. Exports of vanilla decreased by 50 per cent in terms of quantity at 7.65 tonne valued at Rs 21.4 crore.
