The Congress Party on Saturday demanded that the Election Commission take notice of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's alleged audio tape and punish him as per the laws of the land.
Highlighting the audio cassette which revealed how Chouhan was trying to buy votes by promising lucrative posts to his partymen, the President of the Women's Wing of the Congress Party, Shobha Oza, called the incident 'unfortunate'.
"Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clearly violated the Model Code of Conduct. And it is so unfortunate that the Chief Minister was trying to buy votes by promising lucrative posts to his Party men," Oza told ANI here.
"The Election Commission should take notice of this entire audio cassette and should punish Chouhan as per laws," she added.
The Congress Party had yesterday filed a complaint against Shivraj Singh Chouhan for allegedly violating the code of conduct in the run up to the bypolls in the province.
Senior Congress party leader Digvijay Singh had released an audio tape on his social media account, accusing Chouhan of seeking favours from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajesh Chaudhary in lieu of a better post following the byelections.
The bypolls is scheduled to be held today.
The BJP, which is in power in the state, however, was swift to deny the allegations.
The incident comes as a huge blow to the BJP which is battling corruption charges against Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia for helping controversial former IPL boss Lalit Modi with his travel documents.
