A group of firefighters in Melbourne have approached the national workplace commission to win back rights to access Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other websites at the workplace for more than an hour a day.

According to The Age, the ban on spending more than an hour of personal time online during work hours came after some within the fire brigade were warned about spending too much time on the Internet, particularly on Facebook.

United Firefighters Union have argued that firefighters do not have the level of free access to the Internet that the management does, and that it was the brigade's senior officials that were killing time online, the report said.

The report added that an evaluation by fire brigade management last year had established that the top 10 websites being visited by its workers included Facebook, Twitter, nearmap, Google Maps and the Herald Sun.
