Former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi on Tuesday was elected as the President of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).

Earlier, the BCCI had asked the RCA to dissociate itself from Modi, or face action after the latter was banned for life from the BCCI last year for financial irregularities in the IPL.

Modi had taken the matter to the Supreme Court and won the right to take on Rampal Sharma for the post of president.

In January, the Supreme Court had deferred the release of the results of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections, which were held on December 19, till January 17.

A bench headed by Justice A R Dave also agreed to hear the objections raised by the BCCI over Lalit Modi contesting the December 19, 2013 election before declaring the results if Modi comes out as a winner.

BCCI pleaded that Modi should not have been allowed to contest the election as he has been disqualified by the Board for life from being associated with any cricket association.

The bench, however, said the issue raised by the Board would arise only if Modi wins the election and if it happens then it will hear the plea of BCCI before declaring the results.

The RCA elections were held under the supervision of two retired judges appointed by the Supreme Court.

The judges allowed Modi to contest the presidential elections on the basis that the RCA is governed by the Sports Act that was drafted in 2005, and not by BCCI's rules.

In September 2013, a life-ban was imposed by the BCCI on Modi accusing him of causing financial irregularities during his tenure as the IPL commissioner.
