Millions of people observed two minutes of silence on Saturday to remember those soldiers who died in World War I, as Britain marked Armistice Day with the chimes of the Big Ben at 11 a.m., reports said on Saturday.

Services were held around the country to mark the 99th anniversary of the end of the First World War (1914-18), the BBC reported.

On Sunday, which is observed as Remembrance Day, commemorating the sacrifice of those who died in both the World Wars and subsequent conflicts, Prince Charles will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on his mother's behalf.

This year will be the first time when Queen Elizabeth II will only observe the ceremony from a nearby balcony.

Armistice Day was also marked in other countries like France, Belgium and Australia.
