Minister of State for Railways K.J. Surya Prakash Reddy told the Rajya Sabha in a written statement that this figure stood at Rs.265.81 lakh in 2009-10 and Rs.585.79 in 2010-11.

The statement, however, clarified that compensation paid in a given year was not related to the accidents or casualties suffered in that year.

The minister said the railways paid compensation only after a green signal from the Railway Claims Tribunal.

For death and permanent disability, Rs.4 lakh was paid while those injured got between Rs.32,000 and Rs.369,000 depending on the gravity of the injury.
