Apropos the editorial “Guessing the monsoon”, despite an early launch of irrigation projects soon after Independence, India’s dependence on monsoon hasn’t come down significantly. Most large dam projects have stretched much beyond their budgetary and time projections. Besides, there is the problem of rehabilitating project-affected people. Given the ever-increasing need for foodgrain, pulses and vegetables, it is probably time the government made single-point agenda of irrigation just as the US government did with road building.
