What we need is a proactive measure that will serve the twin purpose of channeling surplus milk to those who need it the most and ensuring remunerative prices for those who provide it

The huge surplus of skimmed milk powder that may necessitate lower procurement and, thus, lower prices for milk producers is bad news for dairy farmers (“Milk procurement may drop from October,” September 24). Even more disturbing is the fact that some farmers are reportedly thinking of sending their animals to slaughter houses if milk prices drop. Such a thing, while not uncommon in the West where food is sometimes destroyed to ensure that prices remain high, is unimaginable in our country. Why can’t state governments do their bit and procure the surplus stock of milk powder to provide a glass of milk to children in schools under the mid-day meal schemes? What we need is a proactive measure that will serve the twin purpose of channeling surplus milk to those who need it the most and ensuring remunerative prices for those who provide it. A policy of “creating” demand when there’s no demand is smart economics.
