CBI lessens charge to culpable homicide in IPS murder case

Nearly three months after Singh, a 2009 batch IPS officer, was crushed to death at Banmore in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, the CBI today filed a chargesheet in the court of Judicial Magistrate (I) Suman Srivastava which said the accused had no links to the mining mafia.

"It was not (an) intentional murder. There is no political involvement and no mafia link in the case and it is (a case of) culpable homicide," CBI prosecutor A H Khan told reporters after the 12-page chargesheet was filed in the court of the Judicial Magistrate, in the absence of CBI special court Judge Subhra Singh.

The CBI, which took over the case from the state police following a request from the MP government, has charged Gurjar under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 353 (obstructing government work) of IPC and Motor Vehicles Act which attract a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

"The accused was carrying stones in a tractor-trolley when the deceased IPS officer Narendra tried to stop the vehicle. As the SDOP (Narendra) rushed and tried to stop the vehicle after stepping up on tractor, the accused accelerated and kicked him with his leg following which he fell down and died," Khan said, adding that the incident was not planned.

He also said the accused did not have a driving license. (More)
