He also called for more public funding in science and technology for pioneering research especially in the field of agriculture while speaking on "Controversies around genetically modified crops" at Jamia Millia Islamia's 96th Foundation Day celebrations.
Supporting the need for genetically modified crops given that by 2050 India's population will be 1.6 billion, he flagged the need for "sustainable intensification in agriculture".
"Low input in terms of money and resources and high output must be an important goal in agriculture to feed the rising population.
He also touched upon the history of major scientific revolutions that transformed society saying that "no society could prosper without science and technology.
