The revolving camera in the ATM was found removed and the outer part of the machine broken.
Police said it appeared that the miscreants could not break open the strong chest containing the money and hurriedly left the spot once public started moving around as daylight broke.
A customer who came to withdraw the money, noticed the damage and immediately informed police.
Senior police officials, including Commissioner of Police, Senthamaraikannan visited the spot and carried out an inspection.
They quoted a senior bank official as having stated that Rs 25 lakh was placed in the ATM on January 29 and the balance after withdrawals for three days would be known only after examining details in the Bank's branch in that town.
