Governor K Sankaranarayanan administered the oath of office to Gaikwad at a brief ceremony held at Darbar Hall of Raj Bhawan here.
Gaikwad's term as state information chief will be for five years or until he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, several state ministers, including Patangrao Kadam and Balasaheb Thorat, Chief Secretary Jayantkumar Banthia, Lokayukta Justice (retd) P B Gaikwad, deputy Lokayukta Johny Joseph, former chief information commissioners and senior officers of the state government were present on the occasion.
Gaikwad retired as state Chief Secretary on May 31.
The Governor has made the appointment of Gaikwad exercising the powers conferred upon him under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
