"The Haryana government has prohibited manufacture, storage, sale and distribution of Gutka and Pan Masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients, by whatever name it is available in the market, effective from August 15," Gurgaon Civil Surgeon Dr Praveen Garg said here today.

Earlier, only Food Safety officers were authorised to conduct raids on the sellers of Gutka and Pan Masala.

To enforce the ban in more effective way, the doctors, working at Community Health Centres and Primary Health Centres were also empowered to check sale of these products and the violation of these orders would be punishable, Garg said.

He said that an order to this effect has been issued by the state government in the interest of public health for a period of one year.
