A 35-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in northeast Delhi's Gokulpuri area, after which his family members claimed that he was depressed over not being able to deposit money in his account despite standing in long queues.
Mohammad Shakeel committed suicide around midnight and the post-mortem on his body was carried out today, a senior police officer said, adding that the body has been handed over to family members.
Shakeel's family claimed that he had been visiting a Bank of Baroda branch nearby for the past few days to deposit EMI for a loan he had taken, but he couldn't deposit the money owing to long queues in the aftermath of demonetisation.
However, police said that nothing of this sort had emerged during investigation.
"Shakeel was a scrap dealer and was heavily in debt. He had borrowed money from many people and wasn't being able to pay them back. He was depressed over it and committed suicide," the officer said.
