A police sub inspector was today sentenced to two years jail by a special court for taking a bribe of Rs 2000 in 2003.
The Special Court (Prevention of Corruption) judge Mathurasekharan also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 on sub inspector Srinivasan.
However, the judge acquitted another sub inspector Chandran.
According to prosecution, Veerakalai, a farmer, was named as an accused in an FIR filed by Tirumangalam police in a case relating to a group clash in Sengulam village.
As Veerakalai was not present in the village at the time of the clash, his wife Rajarani sought removal of his name from the FIR.
Srinivasan demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000 to remove the name from the FIR and told her to hand over the money either to him or to Chandran at the station.
Officials from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption arrested Srinivasan while receiving the money and Chandran who was also in the station on February 1, 2003.
The judge said it was Srinivasan who had demanded and accepted the money and Chandran was only a witness.
