Two Bangladeshi cattle smugglers were today killed after BSF personnel opened fire to disperse them when they were trying to smuggle cattle through the border fence along the Indo-Bangla border at Jeetput BOP.
BSF South Bengal Frontier officials said the troops found about 85 Bangladeshi miscreants illegally entering into Indian territory through the border fence along the Indo-Bangla border in North 24-Parganas district and trying to smuggle about 150 cattle from India to Bangladesh in the wee hours of the day.
As the smugglers breached the fence creating a gap of about 10 feet, the BSF troops on duty challenged them. Nearly ten Bangladeshi criminals then encircled the BSF patrol party and tried to snatch weapons from them, BSF officials said adding, they also attacked the security personnel with sharp edged weapons and lathis.
Considering the threat perception, Head Constable Mohan Lal fired a stun grenade, which didn't explode.
Simultaneously, constable Kapil Dev Vyas fired one chilly grenade to deter the miscreants. In the process, one BSF jawan sustained grievous injuries on his hands, BSF officers said.
Meanwhile, other Bangladeshi criminals tried to forcibly smuggle the cattle through the gap in the fence. As the BSF personnel intercepted some of the smugglers, they tried to drag Head Constable Mohan Lal inside Bangladesh.
Sensing the danger Mohan Lal open fired, which resulted in the death of two Bangladeshi cattle smugglers who were identified as Amirul Mandol and Faizul.
While their bodies were found lying inside Indian territory, other smugglers managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness and fog, they said.
During search in the area two sharp edged weapons, mobile phones containing Bangladeshi and Indian sim cards, and a wire cutter were recovered.
The BSF has lodged a protest with their counterparts the Border Guard of Bangladesh about the incident, the officers added.
