India will be allocated $144.5 million as aid for food and development in the US fiscal 1999 budget beginning October 1, US officials have estimated.

The amount will be split into development assistance of $56.5 million and food assistance of $88 million, the officials said.

However, they said the figure was only an expected one as the amount of aid for South Asia was still being finalised.

In addition, India has been allocated $450,000 for international military education and training (Imet) for fiscal 1999 against $475,000 in fiscal 1998 and $404,000 in fiscal 1997, Ambassador Craig Johnson, in charge of budgetary matters at the state department, said.

Bangladesh has been allocated $300,000 for Imet, while Sri Lanka and Nepal have been provided $200,000 each and the Maldives $100,000 for the next fiscal, he said. US President Bill Clinton, in his budget speech on Monday, also requested for $2.750 million to promote South Asia regional democracy in next years fiscal against $3 million in the current fnancial year.
