For instance, Darjeeling tea from Ceylon, French Champagne and Scotch Whiskey from Scotland can be protected by legislation. Any product poised to be sold bearing the same name will be considered in violation of the law and can be taken up as a dispute. The commerce ministry has formulated this legislation to protect products like basmati rice, Alphonso mangoes and Darjeeling tea. This will be an enabling legislation on which items can be notified from time to time. The items will be specified with all relevant technical specifications and will not mean just registering the trademark. The aim is to "strengthen geographical origin and ensure counterfeits don't ruin the image of goods from a particular region.
