Disney and Universal have filed a copyright lawsuit against popular artificial intelligence image-generator Midjourney on Wednesday, marking the first time major Hollywood companies have enter the legal battle over generative AI. Filed in federal district court in Los Angeles, the complaint claims Midjourney pirated the libraries of the two Hollywood studios to generate and distribute "endless unauthorised copies" of their famed characters, such as Darth Vader from Star Wars and the Minions from Despicable Me. "Midjourney is the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism. Piracy is piracy, and whether an infringing image or video is made with AI or another technology does not make it any less infringing," the companies state in the complaint. The studios also claimed the San Francisco-based AI company ignored their requests to stop infringing on their copyrighted works and to take technological measures to halt such image generation. Ninety per cent of Indian financial institutions are focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and GenAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence) as the primary technology enablers of innovation, according to a PwC India report. As per the PwC India report titled, 'Mapping the FinTech innovation landscape in India' data analytics also continues to emerge prominently across nearly 74 per cent responses, underscoring its integral role in driving insights and decision-making within the financial services (FS) sector. It said that 31 financial institutions consisting of banks, insurance firms and fintechs participated in the survey. "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and GenAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence) emerged as the focus area for innovation for Indian financial institutions, with 90 per cent of the respondents citing them as the primary technology enablers of innovation," it said. Consumer Electronics maker Samsung India on Tuesday launched a new range of AI-powered washing machines and aims to be the market leader in the premium segment in the coming quarters, said a company official on Tuesday. The company, which currently holds around 20 per cent of the washing machine market, has "an objective of becoming a consumer leader" by gaining market share quarter-on-quarter, outpacing the industry growth, said Samsung India Senior Director, Digital Appliances, Saurabh Baishakhia. Samsung expects new launches, the ongoing trend of premiumisation in the appliances segment and the coming festive season this year and tailwind from attractive financing schemes breaking down acquisition costs will help it gain in the segment and claim market leadership, he said. IT services company HCL Technologies and tech giant IBM on Tuesday announced a new collaboration to establish a Generative AI Centre of Excellence. Alongwith IBM, HCLTech aims to train 10,000 of its engineers and architects in IBM's AI technologies, specifically 'watsonx'. IBM's watsonx is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data platform built for business. According to a release, the centre will be available through HCLTech's AI and cloud native labs in Noida, London and New Jersey and Santa Clara in the US. It will help enterprises modernise legacy applications, develop IT service management use cases, reduce coding complexity, improve skill development on the watsonx platform and enable continuous innovation.
