Several people have been killed and many hurt in a fire in an apartment block in the Belgian city of Antwerp, police said Wednesday. The blaze broke out on the eighth floor of the building, where more than 200 people live, in the city's Linkeroever neighbourhood and lots of smoke was billowing out, Antwerp police said in a statement. An evacuation of the 10-story building was underway. Local residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed and, if needed, to turn off any ventilators due to the amount of smoke in the air.
A fire broke out in the kitchen chimney of a restaurant in New Delhi's Barakhamba road on Tuesday afternoon, prompting authorities to rush seven fire tenders to the spot, an official said. The Delhi Fire Services said that it received a call at 3.40 pm regarding the fire at the iconic Parikrama, The Revolving Restaurant. A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Centre and others to frame a national fire and life safety framework for high-risk public occupancy premises across the country. The plea said the framework should cover schools, coaching centres, hostels, hotels, guest houses, bed-and-breakfast establishments, restaurants, malls, cinema halls, hospitals and other commercial premises with high footfall. The petition, filed by advocate Narendra Kumar Goswami, also sought directions to all the states and Union territories to conduct within three-four months a special fire and life safety audit of high-risk public occupancy premises, prioritising coaching hubs, schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, banquet halls and malls. At least 12 students were killed after a massive fire blazed through a three-floor commercial building in a residential area in north Lucknow on a busy Monday afternoon, trapping several people. Eyewitnesses said several people jumped out of the building as fire engulfed the structure that houses a pet clinic as well as a centre for students. A fire broke out in a restaurant in southeast Delhi's Kalkaji area early Sunday, an official said. No casualties have been reported. According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), a call regarding the fire at the 'Punjabi Tadka' restaurant was received at 4.45 am. "The fire was brought under control at around 5.40 am after sustained efforts by the firefighting teams. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident," a DFS official said. Three people were killed while two others were critically injured after a fire broke out in a five-storey residential building in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area in the early hours of Friday, police said. According to police, a PCR call regarding the blaze was received at Govindpuri police station at around 2.24 am. The fire erupted in a residential building in Tughlakabad Extension. "A coordinated evacuation effort was carried out as heavy smoke engulfed the building, trapping several residents inside. Eight occupants were rescued from the structure and shifted to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said. Amid concerns being raised over fire safety measures in Delhi in the wake of Malviya Nagar hotel tragedy, official figures reveal that 543 people lost their lives in fire-related accidents in the city in the last six years. A fire broke out in an AC coach of the Thiruvananthapuram-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district early Sunday, railway officials said. No casualties have been reported in the blaze that broke out at 5:15 am in the Kota division of the railways. The fire broke out in the B-1 coach carrying 68 passengers prompting emergency measures, senior railways commercial manager Sourbah Jain said. The affected coach was detached from the rake, and overhead electric supply (OHE) was promptly switched off to ensure safety. All the passengers were deboarded from the train. None of the passengers sustained injuries, Kota railway PRO Ravindera Lakhara told PTI. Arrangements have been made to accommodate them in other coaches for the journey up to Kota, the railways said. An additional coach will be attached at Kota station to restore full capacity. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the railways said.
Twenty-one people have been killed and 61 others injured after an explosion occurred at a fireworks manufacturing plant in Liuyang city, Hunan province, Chinese state media reported on Tuesday. The blast took place around 5 pm on Monday at Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co, a fireworks plant located at Guandu township, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Emergency and fire rescue teams were pressed into service and deployed at the site shortly after the explosion. At least nine people were killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar early Sunday, officials said. The incident was reported around 3.48 am at a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar Phase-I, following which police, fire and disaster management teams rushed to the spot. According to the police, the blaze engulfed flats on the second, third and fourth floors of the building, prompting a large-scale rescue operation. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. "Around 10 to 15 people were rescued from the premises during the firefighting operation.
