Over 5.9 crore ITRs have been filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31, the income tax department said on Saturday. The last date for filing income tax returns (ITRs) 1 and 2 -- for assessees who do not have to get their accounts audited -- for Assessment Year 2026-27 without penalty and interest -- was July 31. Last year, over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 16, 2025, which was the extended date for filing tax returns for AY 2025-26. "Over 5.9 crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31st!," the I-T department said in a post on X on Saturday. ITR Form 1 (Sahaj) is a simpler form that caters to a large number of small and medium taxpayers. Sahaj can be filed by a resident individual having annual income up to Rs 50 lakh and who has salary income, one house property, and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000 a year. ITR-2 is filed by individuals and HUFs not having income from profits and gains in business or profession, but having income from capital gains.

Over 7 crore income tax returns have been filed till 7 pm on Wednesday -- the last day for filing ITRs for income earned in 2023-24 fiscal. "More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far (31st July), out of which over 50 lakh ITRs have been filed today till 7 pm!," the I-T department posted on X. July 31 is the last date for filing income tax returns for taxpayers who do not have to get their accounts audited. The total number of ITRs for AY 2023-24 (fiscal year 2022-23) filed till July 31, 2023 were more than 6.77 crore, with over 64.33 lakh ITRs being filed on 31st July, 2023. The Income Tax Department has extended the income tax return filing deadline for charitable trusts, religious institutions and professional bodies by one month till November 30. Also, the due date for furnishing audit reports for 2022-23 by a fund, trust, institution or any university or educational institution or medical institution in Form 10B/10BB has been extended by a month till October 31, 2023. "The due date of furnishing of Return of Income in Form ITR-7 for Assessment Year 2023-24, which is 31.10.2023 is extended to 30.11.2023," the department said in a statement. ITR-7 is filed by institutions involved in charitable and religious activities; research; and professional bodies, besides political parties and electoral trust.
Over 6.13 crore tax returns for income earned in 2022-23 has been filed so far, as the last date for ITR filing by salaried persons and entities which are not required to get their accounts audited ends Monday midnight. "6.13 crore #ITRs have been filed till yesterday (30th July). 11.03 lakh ITRs have been filed upto 12 noon today (31st July)," the Income Tax department tweeted. Last year, about 5.83 crore income tax returns were filed till July 31. The I-T department asked filers to connect on orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in if they need any assistance.
