The Delhi Police is on high alert with over 30,000 personnel deputed citywide in a multi-layered security net for the Republic Day celebrations, officials said. Around 10,000 police personnel are stationed in the New Delhi district alone, which contains the ceremonial parade route and high-security zones, they say. Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahala said, "For the safety and security of Republic Day celebrations, approximately 10,000 police personnel are deployed in the New Delhi area. Pickets, barricades and all standard operating procedures are in place." Deployment plans, point-wise briefings and contingency measures have been explained to all personnel, and rehearsals have been conducted, he said. Security has been beefed at the Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine, its base camp Katra, and Jammu city following the Red Fort blast in the national capital Monday evening, officials said. A high-intensity explosion ripped through a slow-moving car at a traffic signal near the Red Fort Metro Station, killing at least eight people and gutting several vehicles. Twenty-four people were injured in the blast that occurred during peak evening hours when the area was crowded, officials said. "Security has been beefed up in vital areas of the Jammu region. Security measures have been immediately strengthened at the Vaishno Devi cave shrine and the base camp in Katra," a police officer told PTI. In the wake of a car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening, Bengaluru Police have issued a citywide alert and directed all deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) to intensify security measures across the city. In a memorandum, the Commissioner of Police instructed that Nakabandis (checkposts) be set up across all police station limits and thorough checks of suspicious persons and vehicles be conducted. Inspections at hotels, lodges, PG accommodations, and other places of stay within police limits must be conducted; surveillance should be kept and identities of suspicious persons verified, the memorandum said. A 20-year-old "suspicious" man was apprehended by the CISF on Saturday from near Parliament House Complex, an officer said. The person has been handed over to the police by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel for further investigation, the official said, adding, nothing "incriminating" was recovered from him. The incident comes a day after a man was nabbed trying scaling the wall of the high-security building. "The 20-year-old man was intercepted and apprehended by CISF personnel around 9:30 am on Saturday from the Raisina Road between the Rail Bhawan and the Parliament House. "Initial probe found the man came to Delhi from Bengaluru and was supposed to travel to Dubai. Nothing incriminating has been recovered from him and he has been questioned," a senior security officer said. A copy of his Aadhaar and passport was found in his phone. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Saturday said it has extended an additional security cover to temporarily supervise cargo operations and in-line hold baggage screening system at 69 civil airports of the country under its counter-terrorist cover. A spokesperson for the paramilitary force said the move has been initiated following a directive issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on May 9 "temporarily" extending CISF's cover to these processes in "direct response" to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent security scenario in the country. This new arrangement will be in place till May 18, the spokesperson said. The CISF usually is only entrusted to frisk passengers and their cabin baggage. A Riyadh-Mumbai flight of IndiGo was diverted to Muscat following a "security alert" on Wednesday morning and it landed safely, the airline said here. The aircraft is currently grounded in Muscat, IndiGo said in a statement. Notably, several flights have received threats that turned out to be hoax in the last few days. "Flight 6E 74, operating from Riyadh to Mumbai, was redirected to Muscat due to a security-related alert. The aircraft has been isolated, and all passengers have been safely disembarked," the airline statement said. It did not reveal the number of passengers and crew on board or other details. "Ensuring the safety and security of our customers and crew remains paramount in all facets of our operations. We are working closely with the relevant authorities, and standard operating procedures are being followed," IndiGo said.
As part of their anti-terror preparedness ahead of the festival season, Mumbai police have stepped up security near religious sites and other crowded places across the city, an official said on Saturday. All senior police officials have been asked to pay special attention to security arrangements in their jurisdiction. A procession carrying an idol of Lord Ganesh in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam faced stone-pelting following which heavy security was deployed at important places in the city, police said on Sunday. The incident took place in Mochipura area on Saturday night when some people were carrying the deity's idol for installation as part of the 10-day Ganesh festival. Later, when police reached the spot, their vehicle was damaged in the subsequent stone-pelting, an official said. The situation is currently under control, Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar Lodha told PTI. He said that nearly 500 persons gheraoed the Station Road police station on Saturday night demanding action against an unidentified person who threw a stone at the Ganesh procession in Mochipura area. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday admitted in the state assembly that there have been repeated incidents of bomb blasts in some areas of the northern district of Kannur and said the police will conduct more vigorous investigations there. No-frills carrier Akasa Air on Monday said its Mumbai-bound flight from Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad after it received a "security alert". The captain of the flight followed all required emergency procedures and landed safely at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 10:13 AM on Monday, Akasa Air said in a statement. "Akasa Air flight QP 1719, flying from Delhi to Mumbai on June 3, received a security alert on board. As per prescribed safety and security procedures, the plane was diverted to Ahmedabad," the airline said. The aircraft had 186 passengers, 1 infant and six crew members onboard, it said. The airline further said that all passengers have been deplaned, and "Akasa Air is following and supporting all safety and security protocols on ground".
At least six people, including two policemen, were injured when cadres of Rajendra Mahato-led National Liberation Movement clashed with the police in the national capital's Bhadrakali in front of Singhdurbar Secretariat on Saturday, police said. Two policemen and four cadres of NLM were injured when the police baton charged the agitators who tried to stage a demonstration in the restricted area of Kathmandu. During the anti-government demonstration, 12 cadres of NLM were also arrested from the incident site. The police had to use force as the demonstrators tried to enter the restricted area, Nepal Police spokesperson Nabaraj Adhikari said.
