Country's second largest car maker Hyundai has launched an initiative to educate school children on safe traffic habits in association with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
The Safe Move-Traffic Safety Campaign will initially be launched in five cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad through TV channels, special school contact and residential welfare association (RWAs)programmes.
The school contact programme will reach out to 40 schools in these five cities. Both children and parents will be made aware of best traffic safety practices through RWA programmes.
Nitin Gadkari, minister for road transport and highways said the country saw 500,000 accidents in 2013 that led to 150,000 deaths. "It is very unfortunate the cost of road accidents stood at 55,000 crore and that is 3 per cent of GDP of the country," Gadkari said.
As part of the campaign, the Robocar Poli animation series with messages from Gadkari and Hyundai Motor India brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan will be aired on Hungama TV channel. The 26 episode series will be available in English, Hindi and Tamil languages.
"It is our responsibility to apprise children about the importance of traffic safety for a better future," said Y K Koo, managing director, Hyundai Motor India. The company has also developed a web site to educate children about traffic safety.
