Reebok Forever Floatride Energy ensures you're in control of your movement

There was a time when running shoes were significantly less complex. The technology involved was simple and much easier to understand. Reebok, of course, has made a comeback of sorts in the running market recently, combining some high-quality tech with attractive designs. And with its latest, the Forever Floatride Energy, it’s almost gone back to basics. The shoe, as the name suggests, is another “energy” shoe, but the science involved is uncomplicated: it features a new TPE foam that makes up the midsole, which seeks to maximise the energy return by offering the right cushioning and flexibility.

Reebok has stuck with its trusted blue-and-white colour scheme, and the shoe has a wonderfully modern look to it. In a season dominated by black, the white around the midsole adds a zingy edge to this design. The knitted upper breathes extremely well, and almost reminded me of the Nike Pegasus from a few years ago.

Unlike Reebok’s signature running offering, the Floatride Flexweave, the latest model comes sans a cage that wraps around your midsole. This is a welcome change since the cage almost had a disfiguring element to it, not to mention how it affected the shoe’s stability. Most important, the Forever Floatride Energy’s secure fit ensures that you’re always in control of your movement.

As for performance, the Forever Floatride Energy initially felt rather ordinary on the feet, but the pair really grew on me. What this shoe has going for it most is balance — there is no trade-off between the cushioning and the weight; it is a supremely smooth ride that feels better with each stride. There is a bit of drop involved here, but it’s so tiny that you’re unlikely to notice it.

Now to the most important part: the price. Reebok has been promoting the Forever Floatride Energy as a “budget” shoe. At Rs 9,999, it’s not exactly cheap. But considering how ridiculously expensive running shoes have become, the Forever Floatride Energy gives you the kind of performance and satisfaction you’d normally expect from a pair in the Rs 12,000-Rs 15,000 range. And the best part: these are one of those rare kicks that will appeal to beginners and serious runners alike.
