Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA) on Thursday announced scholarships for the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) students to study in the internationally renowned universities of Japan.
These scholarships will be offered to 30 graduating students of IIT-H to pursue masters or PhD and will cover tuition fees and logistics.
Student scholarships was an extension of a much broader association that was established between IIT-H and the Japanese governmental organisations, including this funding agency after their government had decided to back the institute with funding and other collaborations way back in 2008.
As part of this, JICA is extending integrated support to IIT-H through ODA (Official Development Assistance) loan of 23,035 million yen (around Rs 1,336 crore) for its campus development, joint research collaboration among other things.
Scholarships have been offered every year through JICA-FRIENDSHIP project to facilitate development of research networks between institutions of higher learning and industrial clusters in Japan with IIT-H that would lead to excellence in education and applied research in science and engineering. Under the project 37 IIT-H graduates including 6 students of Masters and 31 PhD students were sent to Japan in 9 different universities, according to JICA.
