SC turns down to impose mother tongue in all primary schools in Karnataka

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday struck down a decision of the Karnataka Government and directed that it cannot make it mandatory for all primary schools in the state to teach in Kannada language.

In July last year, a two-judge bench of the apex court had said its Constitution Bench will examine whether the Government can impose mother tongue or regional language as the medium of instruction at the primary education stage as it has a far-reaching significance on the development of children.
