With just a week to go for the United Nations (UN) Convention on Bio Diversity (CBD), an international event being held in Hyderabad from October 1-19, the Andhra Pradesh government is pulling up its socks to play a good host.
So far, the state government has released Rs 273 crore to various departments to make public places and roads of the city appealing and comfortable to as many as 8,000 delegates from 193 countries who are expected to take part in the event.
Ministers on Saturday requested the people to cooperate in making the event a big success as it provided a unique opportunity to showcase the city to the outside world.
The (UN) convention on biodiversity works on three objectives -- conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use, and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of biodiversity.
The event has three components beginning with a five-day Meeting of Parties (MoP) from October 1-5 where 1,500 delegates are expected to attend. A two-day event —Conference of Parties (CoP 11) — will be held on Oct 8 and 9 that is likely to see a delegate turnout of 5,000 to 8,000. On October 17 and 18, High Level Segment (HL) with heads of various countries will be held.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to visit Hyderabad during the event, according to the event hosts.
