Retail FDI will divide nation: Sharad Yadav

Govt confident of winning LS voting, Opposition raises pressure for withdrawal of decision

Santosh Tiwari New Delhi

On the second day of the discussion on FDI in retail and changes in the Foreing Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the pressure on the government to take back the policy continued in the Lok Sabha.

While Parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath expressed confidence about government sailing through in the voting slated for the evening at around 5 pm,  Sharad Yadav of JD(U) taking part in the discussion in Lok Sabha stressed that FDI in retail would divide India into two parts – one who would be going to the retail stores and the other constituting rest of the people.

Yadav also said the retail FDI was not in the benefit of anybody and urged the government to take it back and indulge in consultation. He told the parties sitting on the fence on the issue of providing support to the government on the motion that they will also have to face the consequences if the policy goes through with their support.

Yadav pointed out that the opposition didn’t want the government to fall on the issue otherwise it would have supported the TMC no-confidence motion. “What we want is withdrawal of FDI in retail decision and we will keep on fighting for this even if it sails through in Parliament,” He added.

Eralier, Basudev Acharya of CPI(M) demanded withdrawal of FDI in retail and said wherever FDI in retail had come, inflation had gone up. Acharya also mentioned the experience of FDI in pharma in the country and said that it had gone against people.

The CPM leader said: “100% FDI in pharmaceutical sector allowed multi-national companies to take over Indian firms. These firms are no longer Indian”.
