For a group of 22 Muslim women, it's a journey from rural roads to the ramp.
Departing from tradition, the women, mostly from rural backgrounds in Uttarakhand, would walk down the ramp here on Friday evening to display outfits they have designed themselves.
"This is a historic occasion. Twenty-two women will walk down the ramp wearing outfits designed by them," said Poonam Sinha, head of the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) in Dehradun.
"Through our efforts, these women finally agreed to start their own small designer units. Instead of wearing all encompassing burqa, these women chose to wear the designer clothes," said an IIE official.
To boost the marketing of the products designed by 65 rural women, including the 22 who will be walking the ramp, the IIE has roped in Nayi Dishayein, a non-governmental organisation.
Pooja Dwivedi, head of the Nai Dishayein, came out with the idea of displaying the products made by the women by organising the fashion show, where Dehradun's top companies like Umang Saree and Bharati Saree would also participate.
