Braving the scorching heat, voters in the western and southern parts of the state today made a beeline at the polling stations to elect their representatives in the first phase of the twin polls in the state for 10 Lok Sabha and 70 assembly seats.
As per the initial reports at the end of the polling time, the overall voters' turnout for this phase stood at 67 percent. But the final turnout percentage could vary as the latest information on voting from some remote areas in the state was still to reach the office of the Chief Electoral Officer when this report was written.
“Till the latest reports the voters' turnout was around 67 per cent and polls were largely peaceful as no incidents of violence were reported. Angul district registered the highest polling at 73 per cent followed by Jharsguda at 72 per cent and Bargarh at 69 per cent. The turnout was lowest at Malkangiri with 48.4 per cent”, said Mona Sharma, Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha. The enthusiasm of the people was very encouraging, she added.
