The Democratic National Convention kicked off with a call to unite the US -- in the wake of widespread nationwide protests against racism and the deadly coronavirus that has taken a toll on the country's economy -- by defeating President Donald Trump in the November 3 elections.

Leading the charge was the former first lady Michelle Obama, who described the nation as "deeply divided".

"We live in a nation that is deeply divided...If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it," Obama said in her video
