At least ten people have reportedly been killed and dozens more injured in a stampede at a temple in Chitrakoot, an area that spreads across both Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Hindu pilgrims were reported to be taking a round of the Kamadgiri Hill, when it gave way and caused the stampede on Monday morning. The stampede took place near Bharat Milap Temple which is located on the back side of the Kamadgiri Hill, said police.

A magisterial inquiry has reportedly been ordered by the collector of Satna District into the incident.

Among the dead are six women, and at the time of the filing of this report, the injury toll was pegged at 30 by the police in Satna District.

The pilgrims were taking a round of the hill on the occasion of Somavati Amavasya - or no moon day that falls on a Monday as per the traditional Hindu calendar.

The Kamadgiri Hill is said to be the place where Ayodhya Prince and future king Lord Ram, his wife Sita and his brother Laxman stayed in the initial years of their 14-year-long exile.

As per the mythology, this temple marks the spot where Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, is said to have tried to convince the latter to return to Ayodhya, to be the king in the wake of King Dashrath's death.
