The Islamic State militants may be holding 24 western hostages including jihadists and Britons whose identities have been kept a secret by their home nations in case their details become bargaining chips for the IS extremists in Iraq and Syria.

France, Italy and Spain have reportedly paid 45 million dollars as ransoms to free hostages from the fighters.

Four French and two Spanish journalists have been freed this year. Islamic State fighters are also holding a 26 year old American aid worker.

According to the Mirror, two Italian aid workers aged 21 and 20 were kidnapped in August in Aleppo.

It is also been believed that hostages from UK had initially gone to fight for the Islamic State militants but decided to return home.
