Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Corporation's Atenza has won the "car of the year" award from the Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference of Japan.
The Atenza, known as the Mazda6 overseas, was chosen for its energy efficiency and fun driving experience, the Japan Times reports.
A Mazda vehicle had last won the award six years ago, the report added.
According to the report, the fully remodeled Atenza that was released last November sold around 24,000 units, double its target, with its diesel version being particularly popular.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Outlander PHEV, a plug-in hybrid vehicle, came in at second position, while Swedish manufacturer AB Volvo's V40 hatchback won in the imported car division.
