Ross Taylor and skipper Brendon McCullum failed to convert their good start into huge runs as they got dismissed at the hands of Dushmantha Chameera for 35 and 18 respectively.
Chameera's other vital dismissals include openers Tom Latham (four) and Martin Guptill (one).
Meanwhile, Suranga Lakmal also chipped in with a wicket for the visitors.
New Zealand are currently leading the two-match series 1-0 after defeating Sri Lanka by 122 runs in the first Test in Dunedin.
